About Somali Action Alliance
The Somali Action Alliance:
History and Future The Somali Action Alliance is a unique organization focused on building the power of the Somali community through collective, proactive action. We began as a project of VOICE for Community Power, and after two years of support, transitioned into a separate organization in 2004. Our beginning as a voter participation project focused on the 2002 senate campaign between the late Senator Paul Wellstone and Norm Coleman. A combination or voter registration, voter education, convening activities and leadership training opportunities created a space where community members could learn and act together. The energy and possibility created provided the impetus to continue working together to shape an organization as the foundation for powerful, ongoing community building. Nearly seven years later, we are beginning to see the results of our work. The Alliance is becoming known in the community, new leaders are coming forward, relationships with allies are formed and strengthened and more people are engaged in issue work. Slowly we are reshaping the conversation from “there is nothing I can do” to “there is something I can do.” The growth of the organization remains steady. A board of nine was formed, 501c3 tax-exempt status applied for and a two year action plan developed. Hashi Abdi was hired as our executive director. Over the past year we've brought parents, teachers and students together to act on education issues and built relationships with school board members and district staff. We implemented a second voter registration campaign. Our ongoing work both increases our visibility in the community and helps us build our base. As we work we are also learning how to build an organizational structure that supports long term change and community engagement. The Organizing Apprenticeship Project has been an important ally and mentor. They provide us ongoing technical assistance and coaching to ensure the work is continually engaging the community and developing leadership for change.
